What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is a biochemical process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy our bodies need to function.

Total metabolic rate represents the calories needed for maintaining body functions, daily activities and the energy cost ofexercise or planned activity.

What is a Metabolic Fingerprint?

Metabolic Fingerprint represents the calories that your body burns naturally each day to maintain vital body functions (heart rate, brain function, breathing). In simple terms, it is the number of calories a person would burn if they were awake, but at rest all day. Your Metabolic Fingerprint can represent 75% or more of a persons total metabolism if they are inactive or lead a sedentary lifestlye.

Why Measure Metabolism?

Since metabolism accounts for a majority of the total calories we need each day, it is a critical piece of information to appropriately establish daily calorie needs.

Traditionally, healthcare professionals, who have not had access to measurement technology, have relied on empirical formulas to make metabolism estimates.

Metabolism is influenced by many factors such as body mass, body composition (the amount of fat and muscle), age, gender and hormones. Formular based estimates standardise these factors and do not adequately account for individual variability, pre-existing conditions, lifestyle factors such  as stress or injury.

How Does The Test Work?

Metabolic rate is measured using a method known as Indirect Calorimetry. This process uses a device with specific sensors to measure the amount of oxygen an individual uses when at rest. Because a person's body uses oxygen to convert food into energy, these measurements can be directly correlated to a person's resting metabolic rate.

The test itself can now be carried out using a small portable, handheld measurement device. The test is as simple as breathing normally into the devices mouthpiece and can be completed within a 30 minute consultation.

Having an accurate measurement of your resting metabolic rate will allow a nutritional plan to be tailored exactly to your personal needs.
